Session Description
Hear from a high school student, a high school teacher, and a coach on how a public high school is transforming their agency and equity for learners versus learning. In this session, you will hear how the Institute’s Youth Summit and Leadership Design Academy supported and guided this journey, as well as first-hand experiences of personalized learning from three different lenses.

Melissa Christian

Johnson Creek School District

Melissa Christian is an Educational Specialist at Johnson Creek School District. Melissa has supported and coached K-8 teachers during their journey to personalizing learning for students’ academic readiness. With great results from K-8 transformation, students have demonstrated the need and desire for learning to be learner-focused in high school. With Melissa’s experience from teaching in the classroom (K-12) to the district’s reading specialist, she has embraced the role of coaching within her educational specialist role.

Courtney Hiers is a Social Studies Teacher at Johnson Creek High School. She graduated from St. Norbert College in May 2016 and is experiencing her second year of teaching at Johnson Creek. Courtney attended the Intsitute for Personalized Learning’s Leadership Design Academy in July 2017 and is working as part of a team to bring personalized learning to Johnson Creek High School.
